Dre Parker, de doce años, podría haber sido el chico más popular de Detroit, pero el último traslado profesional de su madre le lleva a China. Dre inmediatamente se enamora de su compañera de clase Mei Ying. El sentimiento es mutuo, pero las diferencias culturales hacen que su amistad sea imposible. Todo empeora aún más porque los sentimientos de Dre hacen que se enemiste con un matón de su clase que es un prodigio del kung-fu. Sin ningún amigo en una tierra extraña, Dre no tiene a quien acudir excepto al hombre de mantenimiento, Mr. Han, que en secreto es un maestro de kung-fu. Han enseña a Dre que el kung-fu no son sólo puñetazos y movimientos defensivos, sino madurez y calma. Dre se da cuenta de que enfrentarse a los matones será la pelea de su vida.
